چکیده

The intensive I/O generated by multimedia devices and delivered over fast networks requires a new approach to U0 system software design for workstation operating systems. In general, the system should provide more flexibility in how devices are controlled and in constructing the data paths used for data transfer. I argue for the separation of control and data transfer as a general design principle, and describe how I/O bus bandwidth can be used more efficiently through direct connections between VO devices.

Operating System Enhancements for Data-Intensive Server Systems

Recent studies on operating system support for concurrent server systems mostly target CPU-intensive workloads with light disk I/O activities. However, an important class of server systems that access a large amount of disk-resident data, such as the index searching server of large-scale Web search engines, has received limited attention. In this thesis work, we examine operating system techniq...

On Kernel Support for Real-Time Multimedia Applications

Real-time operating system services are required to support multimedia systems that rely heavily of the workstation processor for control of the audio and video processors and movement of audio and video data. Such services are typically not available in existing workstation operating systems. This note comments on the requirements for such services and briefly describes the YARTOS kernel; an o...

Multimedia Synchronization and UNIX

One of the most important emerging developments for improving the user/computer interface has been the addition of multimedia facilities to high-performance workstations. Although the mention of multimedia I/O often conjures up visions of moving images, talking text and electronic music, multimedia I/O is not synonymous with interface bells and whistles. Instead, multimedia should be synonymous...

PAMIR: Parallel Multimedia Information Retrieval System

This paper describes the design, implementation and evaluation of Parallel Multimedia Information Retrieval systems. PAMIR is implemented on a network of Pentium PC based workstations to exploit the I/O and computation parallelism in both insertion and processing phase of complex similarity queries in multimedia Information retrieval. The system is capable to index and query multimedia objects ...

Experiments with Parallel I/o

Commodity hardware and operating systems can be used in place of expensive specialty parallel machines. On such Peer-to-Peer systems, high bandwidth I/O is needed for demanding applications. This work attempts to provide insight into what is needed to get acceptable performance from Peer-to-Peer style Parallel I/O using our Alpha Farm cluster of workstations .
